Splash This charming 1984 romantic comedy put Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah on the map and vastly boosted director Ron Howards stock. Hanks plays Allen, who owns a wholesale fruit-and-veggie business in New York with his womanizing brother Freddie (John Candy). Hannah plays a beautiful mermaid who rescued Allen as a little boy from drowning in Cape Cod and saves him again from the bottom of the ocean as an adult. When she finds his wallet in the water, she follows him to New York, where she comes ashore naked at the Statue of Liberty and is arrested for indecent exposure. Because she has Allens wallet heaven knows where she was storing it the cops call him and release her into his custody. She picks the name Madison for herself after she and Allen walk down the famed avenue. The popularity of the name Madison for girls has increased since the film was released. Even the English press credit the film for making Madison gain in popularity in Britain it became one of the top 50 names for girls in 2005.
