"Proof" seemed like a 100% failure-proof Oscar contender. The drama was already a proven winner at the Tony Awards where the Broadway production won three top trophies in 2001: best play, director and actress ( Mary-Louise Parker). The play by David Auburn also won the Pulitzer Prize. On screen its chief roles were assumed by ultra-cool past Oscar champs Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Oscar nominee John Madden ("Shakespeare in Love"), this $20-million drama seemed destined to be a major Oscar player. The film received some pretty decent reviews. Paltrow received a Golden Globe nomination but got snubbed by the academy. Supporting actor Jake Gyllenhaal earned his Oscar nomination, not for "Proof," but for "Brokeback Mountain." -- T.O. and Hey, Jude!
