The married Swedish actress became persona non grata when she had an affair with her "Strombolini" director Roberto Rossellini in 1949. They fell in love, and she became pregnant with his son. She was denounced on the U.S. Senate floor for her infidelity. Bergman left for Italy. Her husband divorced her, and she married Rossellini. Two years later they had twins, Isabella and Ingrid. The two made movies but then were separated and divorced by 1957. Despite winning the 1956 lead actress Oscar for "Anastasia," she didn't attend, instead waiting until 1958 to make her first post-scandal Oscar appearance.
