Alan Ladd

Alan Ladd The tough guy of such noted films noir as “This Gun for Hire” and “The Blue Dahlia” and the beloved Western “Shane” was anywhere from 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-6, with the consensus being he was around 5-foot-5. In a recent interview with the Times, actress Sophia Loren (5-foot-8 1/2), who starred opposite Ladd in 1957’s “Boy on a Dolphin,” talked about the tricks done in the film to make Ladd appear taller. “He was not very tall. When we were [shooting] on a street, they would find a street with little steps and he would go up two steps. I think it upset him [that he was short]. It became something to laugh at, which was not very laughable.”
