What’s Eating Gilbert Grape

"What’s Eating Gilbert Grape" Leonard DiCaprio received his first Oscar nomination — for best supporting actor — for his haunting performance in this quirky 1993 drama as the mentally handicapped younger brother of Gilbert (Johnny Depp). Because their mother (Darlene Cates) is morbidily obsese — “Jerry Springer Show” morbidly obese — it’s up to Gilbert to take care of his brother. Though the film made less than $11 million at the box office, it has a fervid fan base and turned DiCaprio into a movie star. Paramount Pictures
