'An American Werewolf in London' (1981) After decades of vacillating between serious and silly, director John Landis found a way to merge the two halves of the werewolf legacy in this comic-horror film about two backpacking Americans in England who run afoul of a werewolf on the moors. The same year, Joe Dante directed another horror comedy about werewolves called "The Howling," but "American Werewolf" attracted much attention for its groundbreaking werewolf makeup. Actor David Naughton's on-screen transformation into the werewolf earned makeup artist Rick Baker the first-ever best makeup Oscar. Michael Jackson was so taken with Landis and Baker's take on the werewolf that he asked them to turn him into a werewolf in his music video for "Thriller" two years later. FOR THE RECORD: A previous version of this slide identified the actor as Griffin Dunne.
