Rising Sun (1993) Novel, Screenplay Rising Sun replaced marauding dinosaurs with marauding Japanese capitalists intent on taking over vital American businesses. Critics cried Japan-bashing. Fox, one of the studios not owned by the Japanese at the time, bought the rights. Crichton and screenwriting partner Michael Backes wrote a version of the script, but eventually bailed out, displeased with director Philip Kaufmans vision. The resulting film, a fairly limp thriller starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes, was considerably toned down, but not enough for such critics as the New York Times' Vincent Canby, who noted, It still offends.
