'The Straight Story' -- David Lynch( Walt Disney Pictures )
David Lynch earned a reputation for dark, twisted and highly sexual films such as "Blue Velvet," "Wild at Heart" and "Lost Highway," so it was a little shocking to see him direct a simple, heartwarming film distributed by the Walt Disney Co. The film retains some trademark Lynch-ian oddity -- it's about a man on a cross-country tip on his riding lawnmower -- but it's without the head-scratching moments generated in his other films. The small movie and change of pace paid off for Lynch with glowing reviews, if modest box office.
