‘12 Years,’ ‘Fruitvale’ among noms for Gothams Audience prize
Nominees were announced Thursday for the fourth Gotham Independent Film Audience Award. Frontline awards contenders “12 Years a Slave” and “Fruitvale Station” were both nominated, alongside the more unusual-looking selections of three documentaries “Best Kept Secret,” “Don’t Stop Believin: Everyman’s Journey” and “Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings.”
“12 Years a Slave” led the Gotham awards main nominations with three nods, including best picture. “Fruitvale Station” had two other nominations, including breakthrough director for Ryan Coogler.
Presented by the Independent Feature Project, the Gotham Independent Film Awards will be presented on Dec. 2. To be eligible for the audience award, a U.S. film must have won an audience award at one of the top 50 U.S. or Canadian film festivals.
The audience award nominees emerged from a first round of voting that included some 36 eligible audience award winners. Round 2 voting runs from Friday to Nov 24. Voting is online here.
Joana Vicente, executive director of IFP and the Made in NY Media Center by IFP, said in a statement that the audience award is meant to “showcase films from the festival circuit that have captured audience attention and passion. We are very proud to provide this platform for audiences to vote for their favorite films of the year and recognize the winner as part of the Gotham Independent Film Awards.”
