AFI Fest highlights Dorothy Dandridge, Ida Lupino and Anna May Wong
The upcoming AFI Fest announced Thursday that it will highlight “a trio of diverse female trailblazers” to be featured on the festival’s key art and included in the programming lineup. Dorothy Dandridge, Ida Lupino and Anna May Wong will all be given special recognition by the festival.
“This year, AFI Fest continues its annual commemoration of influential women in film by reviving the contributions of these three screen legends,” said Jacqueline Lyanga, AFI Fest director. “The artwork represents AFI’s mission to preserve cinema history and honor the artists who — to this day — continue to inspire filmmakers from around the world.”
Dandridge was the first black woman to receive an Academy Award nomination for best actress with her performance in “Carmen Jones.” Lupino was a pioneering actress, director and producer. Wong was the first Chinese American movie star.
As part of the Cinema Legacy section, the festival will show Dandridge’s star turn in Otto Preminger’s “Carmen Jones,” the Lupino-directed “The Hitch-Hiker” and E.A. Dupont’s silent film “Piccadilly,” starring Wong.
Wong, Dandridge and Lupino will all be featured on street-pole banners advertising the festival across Los Angeles. The festival is giving away a pair of express passes as part of a contest involving posting photos of the banners via social media. Contest details are here.
As previously announced, this year’s AFI Fest will open on Thursday, Nov. 10, with the World premiere of “Rules Don’t Apply,” the new film directed by Warren Beatty. The festival will run from Nov. 10-17, with the complete lineup announced in October.
