Angelina Jolie’s ‘Maleficent’ poster debuts

The evil sorceress from “Sleeping Beauty” looks pretty evil indeed.

The new poster for Angelina Jolie in “Maleficent” has been unveiled, and the actress doesn’t look like someone you’d have over for Thanksgiving supper.

In a black, horned headdress from a costume designed by Anna B. Sheppard (“DragonHeart,” “Schindler’s List” and “The Pianist”), Jolie stares out in the poster as if she has some rather dangerous designs. The movie is a retelling of the famous fable from the point of view of its villainess.

“Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favorite,” Jolie said at August’s D23, a fan convention for “Maleficent” distributor Walt Disney, which will release the film next July.

“I was terrified of her, but I was so drawn to her. And I wanted to know more about her. ... She had this elegance and this grace and yet ... she was just wonderfully, deliciously cruel.”

The film’s cast includes Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

“Maleficent” is being directed by Robert Stromberg, who won an art direction Oscar for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Linda Woolverton co-wrote the screenplay.
