‘Halloween Returns’: ‘Saw 3D’ scribe to direct new Michael Myers movie

Michael Myers remains unkillable.

The stalwart slasher character will be back on the big screen in “Halloween Returns,” a new take on the long-running “Halloween” franchise set to begin production in July under the direction of Marcus Dunstan, the Weinstein Co. announced Monday.

Dunstan and Patrick Melton came aboard to write the script several months ago; the pair penned several installments of the “Saw” series. As a director, Dunstan’s credits comprise the horror movies “The Collector” and “The Collection.”

The news comes as Dimension looks to monetize other parts of its horror library, including “Scream,” a long-gestating TV adaptation of which debuts on MTV later this month.

Plot details for “Halloween Returns” have yet to be revealed, though it’s safe enough to assume that the mask-wielding, knife-brandishing madman who first terrorized teens in John Carpenter’s 1978 classic “Halloween” will continue to do so.

The character of Myers, a silent killing machine who has been portrayed by multiple actors over the years, most recently appeared in Rob Zombie’s 2007 reboot “Halloween” and its 2009 sequel “Halloween II.”

The latter film grossed a paltry $33 million at the domestic box office (on a $15 million budget) and was poorly reviewed — but apparently it will take more than that to keep Myers down.
