John Carney’s ‘Sing Street’ picked up by Weinstein Co.

“Begin Again” writer-director John Carney has struck a chord, and a deal, with the Weinstein Co. The studio has acquired the Irish filmmaker’s semiautobiographical movie, “Sing Street,” for U.S. distribution, TWC announced Thursday.

Inspired by Carney’s own childhood and his love of music, “Sing Street” is set in 1980s Dublin and follows a teenage boy named Cosmo as he’s forced out of his comfortable private-school bubble and into a rough-and-tumble public school, where he forms a ragtag band, starts shooting scrappy music videos and falls in love.

Carney himself played bass for the Irish rock band the Frames in the early ‘90s and also directed some of its music videos. His breakout feature film, “Once,” starred the band’s founder, Glen Hansard.

This time around, Carney is getting an assist from U2 members Bono and the Edge, who are writing songs for “Sing Street” and collaborating on the movie’s other musical elements. The film is set to begin production in Dublin in September.

The Weinstein Co. is already distributing Carney’s movie “Begin Again,” which opens June 27 and stars Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine.

It remains to be seen whether that film will resonate with moviegoers, but the Weinstein Co. already has its encore lined up.
