When they are good, documentaries on the film business take us deeper into movies in unexpected ways, and two new docs on DVD do exactly that.

“Red Hollywood,” written and directed by Thom Anderson and Noel Burch and distributed by Cinema Guild, takes a look at the films written and directed by the members of the blacklisted Hollywood Ten and reveal more political content than has been previously noticed.

“John Ford: Dreaming ‘The Quiet Man’ ” is an Irish Film Board production distributed by Olive Films. It offers an intimate look at the career of the great director and how he came to make a film that was particularly close to his heart.
