Guess he wasn’t named the Official Superhero of Times Square 2014 for nothing.

In a new trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” that was unveiled during ball-drop celebrations in New York’s New Year’s Eve ground zero Tuesday night, the Marvel web-slinger is shown facing off against his high-voltage nemesis Electro (Jamie Foxx) in the crowded urban tableau of Times Square.

“Yo Sparkles!” Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man shouts by way of calling out the electricity-spouting supervillain.

Appropriately enough, in the clip Electro appears to use the Big Apple’s traditional New Year’s Eve festivities for maximum criminal mischief (jumper-cabling the city’s electrical grid to shoot lightning from his hands, causing minor earthquakes, flinging cop cars down upon New York’s finest like so many Lincoln Logs) before the intervention of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

(Fellow super-baddie the Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti, also crops up briefly in the trailer.)

Due out May 2 from Sony, the mega-budget superhero reboot marks director Mark Webb’s second Spidey-go-round, on the heels of last year’s “The Amazing Spider-Man,” which grossed more than $752 million worldwide.

Sony Pictures provides this synopsis for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”:

“We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: Only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.”
