Outfest awards ‘Keep the Lights On’ with two top prizes
The switch hasn’t been flipped yet: Ira Sachs’ “Keep the Lights On” earned two top prizes at the Outfest film festival in Los Angeles.
The relationship drama, which was recently picked up for theatrical distribution by Music Box Films, received the festival’s grand jury award for U.S. dramatic feature film and the jury’s screenwriting award for script, which was penned by Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias.
The film, about two men who struggle through love, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. And it received the Teddy Award, the prize given to films with an LGBT theme, at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.
On the acting side, Tony Award winner Alan Cumming won the grand jury award for actor in a feature film for his portrayal as a gay man who takes in a mentally handicapped teenager in “Any Day Now.” The film also received the audience award for feature film. Fenessa Pineda received the grand jury award for actress in a feature for the coming of age drama “Mosquita y Mari.”
Sally El Hosaini’s “My Brother the Devil” took the prize for an international dramatic feature. And the award for documentary feature went to Wu Tsang’s “Wildness”
The LGBT-oriented film showcase, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, ends Sunday with “Struck by Lightning,” the comedy written, produced and starring “Glee’s” Chris Colfer.
