LACMA to present restoration premiere of ‘Rebel Without a Cause’

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art will unveil a new restoration of Nicholas Ray’s seminal 1955 teen drama “Rebel Without a Cause” Nov. 1 at the Leo S. Bing Theater.

The 4k digital restoration of the classic starring James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo will be introduced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who is also the chairman of the Film Foundation, an organization dedicated to restoring and preserving film heritage.

“Rebel Without a Cause,” which features such Los Angeles landmarks as Griffith Park, was released Oct. 27, 1955, less than a month after Dean’s tragic death in a car accident at the age of 24 on Sept. 30.

Both Wood and Mineo earned Oscar nominations for their performances in the blockbuster.

The film’s digital restoration was done by Warner Bros. in collaboration with the Film Foundation with funding provided by Warner Bros., Gucci and the Film Foundation.

Warner Home Video is to release a Blu-ray edition of the digital restoration of “Rebel Without a Cause,” as well as Dean’s other two classics, 1955’s “East of Eden” and 1956’s “Giant,” on Nov. 5
