Backstage at the Shrine Exposition Center was hopping Saturday night as the winners of the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards -- in very high spirits -- filtered through to chat with reporters. A sampling:
-- "Would you guys like a rear view or a frontal?"
That was Jared Leto being only mildly provocative. He wasn't actually offering to strip down but rather referring to his new statue -- which depicts, of course, a buff, nude man.
It’s been a pretty great week for Leto, who, in addition to his SAG Award, scored a Golden Globe last Sunday and an Oscar nomination Thursday for his turn as a transgender AIDS patient in “Dallas Buyers Club.” Despite the accolades, the actor is still spending most of his time playing music with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars. (“Dallas” marked his first feature film role in six years.) In fact, Leto said, he’d be playing some gigs in Mexico with his band soon.
While the musical act is "alive and well," Leto acknowledged that "being a part of a film that's as special as this certainly makes me want to work with more interesting people."
-- Was Cate Blanchett happy with her win for "Blue Jasmine"? "Yes."
As laughter erupted in the room due to her briefness, Blanchett elaborated: "This has been an extraordinary, extraordinary week," she said, noting she'd met Rita Moreno and that her award was bestowed on her by Robert De Niro. "You can't get much better than that."
What about that photo online of her and Jessica Chastain having a good laugh at the Golden Globes? No go. "I don't participate in social media. That was extremely funny and naughty and private."
-- Enough with the style questions for the "American Hustle" cast. That's what Bradley Cooper seemed to be announcing as he left the room during one such question from a reporter. His abrupt departure left co-star Jennifer Lawrence alone to finish fielding a question about what it was like for her and Cooper to go from director David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook" to "American Hustle."
"It really just seemed like one kind of seamless ... you, Cooper," she cursed as he took off.
-- And finally, what was Matthew McConaughey trying to say about Neptune? Don't look to us for answers or, apparently, him either.
“I’ve been having fun with the [awards] circus,” he said. “If I wasn’t having fun, take me behind the woodshed and straighten me out.”
