Tribeca 2013: Julianne Moore, cat videos to be available online

The Tribeca Film Festival will make a number of selections from this year’s gathering available online and via video on-demand.

Organizers said Monday that movies including the YouTube cat exploration “Lil Bub & Friendz” from buzzy production company Vice Media as well as “Farah Goes Bang,” a feature about virginity and the John Kerry campaign, will be streamed just after their festival debuts at tribecaonlinefestival.com. Several other features and shorts will also be available on the platform.

Meanwhile, the festival will make available via cable operators and online retailers such as Amazon and YouTube another group of movies. That list includes Daniel Algrant’s fact-based relationship tale “Greetings from Tim Buckley,” a dramatization of the life of the famous musician and his relationship with his son, and Craig Zisk’s “The English Teacher,” the Julianne Moore-Greg Kinnear drama that makes its world premiere at Tribeca.

As they have sought to expand their reach in a digital world, festivals have begun offering movies on various new-media platforms. Sundance, for example, allows a number of films on its slate to be viewed on its site as well as those of its partners during and after the festival.

The 12-day Tribeca gathering kicks off April 17 with the music doc “Mistaken for Strangers.”
