SBIFF to honor David O. Russell with Outstanding Director Award
David O. Russell, whose new film, “American Hustle,” has become an awards-season favorite — and box office smash — will receive the Outstanding Director Award at the 29th edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
It was at the first-ever screening of ‘American Hustle’ for the SBIFF Cinema Society last November that I knew precisely who should receive our Outstanding Director Award,” Roger Durling, executive director for SBIFF, said in a statement. “Russell has matured into one of the most essential voices in film today. He has the eye for the picture he wants to present and then does so, with an expertise that is as bold as it is a joy to watch.”

Russell’s tale of a con man forced into the working world of the FBI took home three Golden Globes on Sunday, for Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams in the acting categories and for best motion picture, musical or comedy. The film is also up for 10 Oscars, including best motion picture. “Hustle” also received British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Screen Actors Guild Award nominations this year, including a Directors Guild of America nomination for Russell.
Russell’s honor will take place at the Arlington Theatre on the second day of the film festival, which runs from Jan. 30 through Feb. 9. The festival plans to showcase more than 200 films, tributes and symposiums this during its run that attracts more than 75,000 attendees, according to a news release.
Other recipients of the SBIFF Outstanding Director Award include Quentin Tarantino and Kathryn Bigelow.
