Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon Levitt) is a trained architect working at a greeting card company. Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) is his boss's new assistant. He falls in love with her after they share a conversation in the elevator. What follows is an "Annie Hall"-inspired, nonlinear look at their relationship, from Tom's perspective. Why it failed/how they broke up: Tom is in love with Summer, and Summer doesn't believe love exists. They break up after Tom becomes jealous of another man, but Tom doesn't understand why the relationship didn't work, recalling only the happy moments they shared, like kissing in the copy room and playing make-believe in IKEA model rooms. After he learns Summer is engaged to someone else, Tom begins to see the flaws in their relationship. Turns out Summer believes in true love after all -- just not with him.
