'The Hunger Games' series (2012-2015)

Based on: The planned four-movie series is based on the bestselling "Hunger Games" trilogy by Suzanne Collins, including "The Hunger Games," "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay." Premise: Heroine Katniss Everdeen is a teenager forced to fight other starving children in a televised battle to the death for the enjoyment of wealthy spectators in a post-apocalyptic version of North America. Who's who: Jennifer Lawrence portrays the bow-and-arrow-toting Katniss. Her ally in the arena is Peeta Mellark, played by Josh Hutcherson. Liam Hemsworth plays Gale Hawthorne; Elizabeth Banks plays Effie Trinket; and Woody Harrelson plays Haymitch -- just a few of the actors in the star-studded cast. Box office: The first film in the series was a box-office smash, garnering more than $691 million worldwide. The combined box office for the final three films ended up grossing $2.967 billion.
