It comes less than two weeks into 2015, but an upcoming tribute to singer and songwriter Emmylou Harris in Washington, D.C., easily looks to be a strong contender for Americana music event of the year. Scheduled for Jan. 10, the show features performances by Kris Kristofferson, Lucinda Williams, Mavis Staples, Joan Baez, Steve Earle, John Hiatt and Harris herself along with about a dozen other musical guests.

“The Life & Songs of Emmylou Harris: An All-Star Concert Celebration” will be taped for future telecast or home video release at DAR Constitution Hall and will also feature Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Griffin, Iron & Wine, Shawn Colvin, Shovels & Rope, Trampled By Turtles, Sara Watkins and the Milk Carton Kids.

Americana stalwarts Don Was and Buddy Miller will be the musical directors and also lead the backing band for the various guests.

“Emmylou Harris and her songs have inspired music fans and musicians all over the world,” Was said in a statement. Miller added, “I have been blessed to be both a dear friend and music partner of Emmy’s, and look forward to an extraordinary night of music.”

Since the 1970s, Harris’ doggedly eclectic melange of country, rock, pop, folk, gospel and bluegrass music made her one of the pioneers in the cross-genre community that came to be known as Americana.

Harris, 67, has collected 13 Grammy Awards and numerous other accolades over the last 40 years from the Academy of Country Music, the Country Music Assn. And the Americana Music Assn., among other groups.
