Singer Glen Campbell has called off August performances he was scheduled to play in Australia and New Zealand on what’s being billed as his Goodbye Tour because of health issues, a spokesman for the musician said Wednesday.

Campbell, who is 76 and has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, said the long flight to that part of the world would be more than he could handle. A source close to Campbell told The Times last year that the Goodbye Tour would go on only as long as Campbell felt able to continue performing.

“He has always loved performing in these countries and apologizes to his fans Down Under,” a spokeswoman for Campbell said Wednesday.

Last month he played his final concert in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl. A fan who saw his performance Sunday night in Panama City, Fla., posted a noted on Campbell’s website saying, “his voice is still wonderful; he just seemed very tired. I hope this tour just isn’t too much for him. He just couldn’t communicate.”

Campbell, who lives in Malibu, went public last year with his Alzheimer’s condition because he said he wanted to continue performing as long as possible and wanted the public to know he wasn’t drunk or under the influence of other substances if he forgot words to songs or seemed confused on stage.

He’s still got eight dates scheduled in seven states, six shows slated through the end of this month and two more in October.
