Song premiere: The Mavericks’ ‘Fall Apart’ from reunion album

It’s a taken a while—even longer than the group expected—but the Mavericks reunion album “In Time” finally arrives on Feb. 26.

The genre-defying country-rock-Latin-roots band originally was going to put the album out last fall, then decided to hold off so it would coincide more closely with a full-fledged reunion tour that kicks of Monday, Feb. 25, in New York and hits Southern California for several stops in March. The Los Angeles date is March 26 at the El Rey.

“We didn’t want to just do a reunion tour — we wanted to make a new record, and make a really good new record,” lead singer and chief songwriter Raul Malo told The Times last year when the band formally returned to action with a performance at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio. “The end result was really fantastic, [and] it was really on a whole other musical level than we have ever touched upon before.”

The group, rounded out by Robert Reynolds, Paul Deakin, Eddie Perez and Jerry Dale McFadden, gave fans a sampling of the new music last year with the five-track EP “Suited Up & Ready.” Pop & Hiss has the exclusive premiere of one track from the new album titled “Fall Apart,” a characteristically effervescent rock-Latin hybrid, peppered with mariachi-inspired trumpets, for this ode to the upside of heartbreak.

“I like that this turns sadness and a break-up into a positive thing,” Malo writes in the press kit. Because the idea of being better for loving someone for five minutes is better than having never known them at all is such a good way to look at it. It could be many things: a one night stand, a friend, a cup of coffee… You never know, but in the end, you’re better for being loved or experiencing that.”
