Red Bull Sound Select offers more details of L.A. ‘music takeover’

Share

Those who peruse online music sites have perhaps been bombarded of late with exclamatory ads regarding a month-long series of events dubbed Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 30 Days in LA. A music-centered set of cultural happenings sponsored by your 2 a.m. juicing-up beverage of choice, the series will occur throughout Los Angeles in November.

In addition to a full roster of gigs at various venues by acts including Run the Jewels, Future Islands, Warpaint, the Head & the Heart, Chance the Rapper, A$AP Mob and dozens of others, the series, which the drink company has dubbed a “citywide music takeover,” will offer a pretty cool series of non-concert events.

They include a record spin in a wax museum, a screening of “This Is Spinal Tap” at a downtown drive-in movie theater, a table tennis tournament and more, the details of which are outlined below.

Red Bull’s month of shows is the recent of many initiatives that the company has set in motion in and around Los Angeles. Like kindred marketing spirits Converse, Red Bull has directed much commercial energy on music culture (and cliff diving, auto racing, rock climbing and dozens more sports and entertainments).

In L.A. and other cities, the brand has sponsored rising bands, producers and DJs under the banner “Red Bull Sound Select”; these acts, many imported from elsewhere, will perform as openers throughout the month’s shows. This is in addition to the brand’s innovative annual “music academy,” which is underway in Tokyo and draws artists and thinkers from around the world.

Yes, the events occurring throughout the month will be branded, and you may find yourself exiting shows with a certain tangy-sweet taste in your mouth. But in a music culture in which brands are helping to fill artists’ wallets made thin by vanishing record royalties and laughably low streaming-service paychecks, who’s to argue?

Here are fresh details on November’s non-concert happenings. For further information and to RSVP to some of these events, which will probably sell out, hit the 30 Days in LA site.
