Summer concerts? Here’s a guide

This summer’s up-and-coming concert season is rife with enough star power to break those vacation savings, so Pop & Hiss has decided to make things easier. Here’s a guide to help you plan what shows are worth catching, depending on your mood.

Try to out-shimmy the mighty pop diva herself, Beyoncé (Staples Center, June 28 and July 1). Flutter over the heady, ethereal musings of Björk (Hollywood Palladium, June 2, 5, 8, and the Hollywood Bowl, June 11). Get the party started with Pitbull & Kesha (Hollywood Bowl, June 18), or unleash your inner punk with Fall Out Boy (the Wiltern, June 13). Watch Justin Bieber channel Micheal Jackson (Staples Center, June 24-25). Dip into reggae riddims with Damian Marley, Stephen Marley and Third World (Hollywood Bowl, June 30).

Flashback to those rebellious teenage years on the gritty blues rock of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (Fonda Theatre, June 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11) or get fresh at basement parties to the classic hip-hop of LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Public Enemy and De La Soul (Greek Theatre, July 7). Get lost under the impermeable spell of Fleetwood Mac (Staples Center, July 3). Rediscover the ‘90s New Jack Swing era with Guy, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Dru Hill, SWV and Al B. Sure (Greek Theatre, July 5).

For the perfect date night, check out pop comeback kid Justin Timberlake and rap king Jay-Z (Rose Bowl, July 28). Take a quick road trip down to Irvine for an impressive mix of buzzy and chart-topping rappers such as Wiz Khalifa, ASAP Rocky, B.o.B, Trinidad James, Joey Badass and Pro Era (Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, July 18). Revel in the funk-dipped pop of Bruno Mars (Staples Center, July 27-28). Revisit the golden age of boy bands New Kids on the Block, 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men (Staples Center, July 5) or gush over the dreamier, and much younger, bubble gum pop of One Direction (Staples Center, Aug. 7-10). Cry out that crushing heartbreak with Taylor Swift (Staples Center, Aug. 19-20, 23-24). Unwind, or wallow, in the moody indie rock of the National (Greek Theatre, Aug. 10).
