Nortec Collective vets and ‘Baja-inspired bites’ should be a tasty combo at downtown UCSD URBAN event

It’s been 10 years since Nortec Collective co-founders Pepe “Fussible” Mogt and Ramon “Bostich” Sánchez released their first internationally distributed duo album for Nacional Records.

Entitled “Tijuana Sound Machine,” it was credited to Nortec Collective Presents Bostich + Fussible. The album featured a brassy, beat-happy fusion of the electronica and traditional Mexican norteño music, banda and cumbia that the original, seven-man Nortec Collective group had pioneered in the late 1990s in Tijuana.

“Tijuana Sound Machine” earned Bostich + Fussible the first of their two Grammy Award nominations (in the Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album category).

”If we win, we’ll give it to Tijuana,” Mogt told the Union-Tribune in a pre-Grammy interview with Sánchez. The full Nortec Collective had previously received two Latin Grammy nominations.

“Tijuana Sound Machine” marked the first time Bostich + Fussible began working with a live band, rather than relying entirely on synthesizers, samples and sequencers. They have continued that potent combination ever since.

In 2016, Bostich + Fussible performed at the Coachella festival to kick off a one-year farewell tour that never quite ended. Their musical partnership dates back to the mid-1990s, when they worked together in the electronica-oriented Monnithor.

Now, after only four previous Bostich + Fussible concerts this year, the duo is set to perform Saturday with their full band and guest flutist Wilfrido Terrazas, who is a University of California San Diego assistant music professor.

The show is being billed as Bostich + Fussible’s only remaining scheduled concert of 2018, as they are devoting their time to completing a new album, set for release next year.

Saturday’s performance will be held adjacent to the downtown San Diego site of what will become UC San Diego URBAN, the university’s four-story, 66,000-square-foot facility, which is scheduled to open in 2021 and will be operated by UC San Diego Extension.

Saturday’s 21-and-up event, hosted by UC San Diego URBAN, will include free samples of “Baja-inspired bites” by eight leading regional chefs. The food portion of the evening is being curated by Vanguard Culture.
