Blues-rock guitar fireball Joe Bonamassa to honor country music greats at Humphreys

Share

Joe Bonamassa’s decision to bill his 2018 American summer tour as “The Guitar Event of the Year” might be questioned by anyone who witnessed Jeff Beck’s extraordinary performance Sunday at Mattress Firm Amphitheatre.

But Bonamassa’s pending tour, which opens with a pair of shows Thursday and Friday at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, will have a welcome new twist.

In the past, this blues-rock fireball and PBS TV pledge-drive favorite has paid tribute to B.B. King, Muddy Waters and other towering blues legends.

For this tour, he will instead salute the work of four towering country-music legends: Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and George Jones. Not surprisingly, Bonamassa will give their classic songs a blues-rock hue.

To provide a resonant, down home — or is that Down Under? — flavor, Bonamassa’s band will be augmented by singer and rhythm guitarist Troy Cassar-Daly, one of Australia’s leading country-music artists.
