Eddie Vedder, Eric Church, Mumford & Sons to headline 2018 Ohana Festival in Dana Point

Former San Diegan Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Eric Church and Mumford & Sons will headline the third annual Ohana festival in Dana Point. Vedder, who grew up in San Diego’s North County and is an avid surfer, co-founded Ohana in 2016 with surfing legend Kelly Slater.

To be held Sept. 28-30 at Doheny State Beach, the lineup for this year’s edition will also include Beck, Norah Jones, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Amos Lee, Liz Phair, Grammy Award-winning San Diego band Switchfoot (with San Diego surfing great Rob Machado as a special musical guest), Young the Giant, the John Doe Folk Trio, Plague Vendor, Fantastic Negrito and more.

The festival takes place two weeks after the four annual KAABOO Del Mar festival will be held at the the Del Mar Racetrack and adjacent fairgrounds. This year’s KAABOO headliners include Foo Fighters, Katy Perry, Imagine Dragons and Robert Plant.

Tickets for the 2018 edition of Ohana go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at ohanafest.com. Single-day general admission passes cost $99.75. Weekend general admission passes are $275. Single-day VIP passes are $499, while VIP weekend passes are $1,200. These prices do not include service fees and taxes.

A crowd estimated at 35,000 attended last year’s Ohana Festival. A portion of the proceeds from Ohana will benefit the San Onofre Parks Foundation. The California non-profit cooperatively works with the California State Parks to develop, preserve and enhance the recreation and experience of California’s coastal parks.

Ohana is produced by Live Nation, which owns and operates Mattress Firm Amphitheatre in Chula Vista and the House of Blues nightclub in downtown San Diego.

A triple first prize-winner for criticism and arts writing at the 2022 and 2023 San Diego Press Club awards and a double first prize-winner at the 2022 and 2023 San Diego Society of Professional Journalists awards, Varga is also a contributing writer for Jazz Times magazine and has written for Billboard, Spin and other publications. After attending San Diego City College and San Diego State University, he created and taught the 2002 UC San Diego Extension course, “Jazz in a Post-Ken-Burns World.” Varga has written liner notes for more than a dozen albums, including by jazz sax greats James Moody and Michael Brecker, and contributed two chapters to the book, “Dylan: Disc By Disc.”
