Those two really remind me of "glitzy" Maxwell Anderson and his society "actress" wife. It's sad that when we need an Anne d'Harnoncourt - we get these climbers.

If you want the best collection and the best art and the best person to do it, you need to pay the best you possibly can. I think He is worth it. We all live in the art world and NYC still is the center of it. Be grateful he was willing to leave to la la of LA to do his job!

He seems to be doing yeoman work in a job that, in flush times, would be apportioned among several people - at a significantly higher cost.

I've commented on this kerfuffle today in my CultureGrrl blog, here: http://www.arts-journal.com/cult-uregrrl/2009/08/-is_michael_govan-_worth_a_milli.h-tml

Of couse, the Director deserves a large salary, he is resonsible for a large organization...-if he is doing a good job running it he should be conpensated accordingly...

If he wasn't doing his job, if LACMA's reputation wasn't improving as it has since he arrived, if fundraising was tanking, then yes, I'd have a problem with the money and his travel schedule. But the opposite is the case, actually.

The article didn't mention that the house the museum had for him when he took the job was deemed unacceptable by him and the museum had to purchase a different one at the height of the real estate bubble. I'd like to know if he paid for the remodel on it or did the museum throw that in as a perk .

fact is he has earned his million a year, he has had a huge impact on LACMA fundraising, image and ambition. deserves it.
