Old Men Groaning
Cameron, 9
St. Margaret's Episcopal School
San Juan Capistrano
Trees of coal droop like old men groaning in the silence of the morning. I stride in a lonely forest of dead men, stroking the crusty black bark that clings to life, and I taste their silver sadness.
Spring
Marlena, 8
Multnomah Elementary
Los Angeles
What is spring without flowers? What is a super hero without his powers? What is spring without grass? What is a teacher without her class?
Cerulean Peace
Grant, 10
Las Flores Middle School
Las Flores
The sapphire waves shine with sunlight as I glide through the smooth shivering sea, inhaling the clean scent of salt in the wind. The waves smash onto the shore like an avalanche of rocks crashing into the ground. White dunes of sand stretch along the shoreline, blown into small mountains by the wind. Sea gulls speed through the air like tiny smoke-gray jets as they caw to their mates, and I taste cerulean peace.
Springtime
Alexis, sixth grade
Palm Crest Elementary
La Cañada
It's perfect. Spring brings flowers and cheer. Spring makes children jump and scream. Spring just does so many things. Ah, spring!
Soccer in the Summer
Gabi, 8
Pegasus School
Huntington Beach
Like the bright sun rolling across the sky, the soccer ball rolls across the river of grass. I hear the sound of happy children, like monkeys in spring. As the scent of sizzling hot dogs wafted toward me, I taste victory, sweet as apple pie, as the hot ground seeps through my shiny cleats.
Sunny Day
Caroline, first grade
Newport Coast Elementary
Newport Coast
I'm so happy, it's a sunny day. I laugh, dance, sing and play! The sun is warm, the sun is bright, I want to stay out until it's night.
