Where to toast dad on Father’s Day in the L.A. area

Drinking with dad is an underrated pleasure. After a whiskey or maybe a few beers he’ll start to open up. He might tell you about that time in college when he got busted for something he once busted you for. He’ll tell you how he fell in love with your mom, and about the trips they took before you were born. You might shoot a few rounds of pool, or walk to the restaurant across the street for a burger, but mostly you’ll just hang out and talk. Fathers are best at being low maintenance, so this Father’s Day celebrate dad by doing what he does best: relax. Here are a few places to do just that.

The Pub at Golden Road

There’s nothing today’s dad could appreciate more than a quality craft beer. Golden Road Brewing makes its suds, including a bright and crisp IPA and a lush, full-bodied hefeweizen, on site, so the beer travels only a few hundred feet to reach your glass. On Father’s Day the brewery’s casual pub and inviting outdoor patio is offering a breakfast burrito and a beer for $12. What could be easier? The Pub at Golden Road, 5410 West San Fernando Road, L.A. The Counter

On Father’s Day, dads get a free one-third pound burger as long as you remember to say that your dad is a “BFD” (which stands for “Big, Freaking Deal”) and of course that’s true for just about any dad. This option is available only if you dine in and also buy yourself a burger, so it’s a two-for-one deal. We also consider it a win-win. Take the money you save and buy your dad a drink with your meal, or head somewhere after. The Counter, multiple locations. https://www.thecounterburger.com

Bouchon Bistro

If dad is a foodie, take him to Bouchon Bistro, where the food is decidedly upscale but also father-friendly. On Sundays fathers get a free glass of Thomas Keller’s White Apron pilsener and a jelly doughnut. Beer and sweets alone may not fill him up, but the restaurant’s special, pork-based offerings for Father’s Day include a pulled pork sandwich with a fried Jidori hen egg, certainly will. Eagle Rock Brewery

Enjoy “pints for pops” day at this low-key neighborhood brewery, which makes some of the finest craft beer in the city. Try a rare and satisfying Equinox, a barrel-aged blond sour, or a Unionist Belgian pale ale, which offers hints of spice and a bold, malty counterpoint. Food will be served picnic-style with Flatiron truck chef and owner Timothy Mark Abell cooking up burgers, steak and rich bacon-spiked macaroni and cheese. Eagle Rock Brewery, 3056 Roswell St., L.A.
