Yankees give Fox an edge

What difference does it make having the New York Yankees in the World Series? Plenty, as Fox was able to attest Tuesday with the release of last week's prime-time television ratings.

The network averaged 19.14 million viewers for the first four games of the baseball championship that pitted New York against the Philadelphia Phillies. Last year, when the Phillies faced off against Tampa Bay, Fox averaged 13.18 million for the first four games.

With three of the games finishing as the most-watched programs of the week, Fox shot to the top of the ratings competition as reported in figures from the Nielsen Co., with CBS second, ABC third and NBC a distant fourth.

The list of ratings will be published in Calendar later this week.

-- from staff and wire reports Rihanna speaks out on violence

Rihanna says dealing with the media attention after being assaulted in February by ex-boyfriend Chris Brown was humiliating. But she now hopes to speak for young women who are afraid to talk openly about domestic violence.

The 21-year-old pop star told Glamour magazine in an interview posted online Tuesday that she didn't realize how much her decisions affected people she didn't know, like her many fans. She feels stronger, wiser and more aware now, she added.

"Domestic violence is a big secret," Rihanna said. "The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn't heard. Now I can help speak for those women."

Brown, 20, pleaded guilty to felony assault in June.

Victor Pinchuk, one of Ukraine's richest men, plans to build a contemporary art center in downtown Kiev, with the hope of making the country's capital a major destination on the global art map.

Pinchuk, 48, said in an interview that the new building will be bigger than his existing PinchukArtCentre, the first private center of contemporary art in the former Soviet Union. The new project will also supplement the regular shows already being held at the center that Pinchuk said has had more than 830,000 visitors since it opened in 2006.

The steel billionaire is one of the world's leading contemporary art collectors, owning works by such artists as Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and German photographer Andreas Gursky.

-- bloomberg news It's another chance at peace

Yoko Ono and Sean and Julian Lennon have authorized a 40th anniversary digital single of the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band track "Give Peace a Chance" to generate funds for the U.N. Peacebuilding Fund.

It's available for download for $1.29 at iTunes, and EMI Music and Sony/ATV Publishing have agreed to donate net proceeds to the fund through December.

The recording was made during Lennon and Ono's famous bed-in for peace in 1969, when they spent a week conducting interviews from their hotel bed in Montreal.

Intriguingly, iTunes customers who download the track are offered four other recommendations: George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" (makes sense -- it would keep the spiritual feeling going), Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy" (OK, it includes the line "peace, remember peace is how we make it"), Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" (recommended because, er, it's another Lennon song?) and, finally, Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" (a grim reminder in case the peace message doesn't get through?).

-- Randy Lewis Fox cooks up 'Master Chef'

Fox has ordered up "Master Chef," a new reality show that will pit amateur cooks against one another in a battle for culinary supremacy.

Gordon Ramsay, star of the network's other food-centric hours, "Hell's Kitchen" and "Kitchen Nightmares," will co-produce and headline "Master Chef," based on a format that originated in the United Kingdom and more recently shattered ratings records in Australia.

-- Denise Martin How to snuggle up to Weezer

Weezer may be cozying up to rapper Lil Wayne and singing songs such as "I'm Your Daddy" on its new album, "Raditude," but the band hasn't completely abandoned its persona as rock 'n' roll's lovable geeks.

With the release Tuesday of the new album, the band followed through on its promise to release a Weezer-branded Snuggie -- a blanket with sleeves.

The promotional item is available for purchase on the Weezer website for $30, and the "Snuggie bundles" come complete with the Weezer CD.
