3-D, briefly, at HollyShorts Film Festival

The sixth annual HollyShorts Film Festival is succumbing to the current 3-D craze with two of its opening-night movies. David Arquette’s period romance “The Butler’s in Love” and Sean Isroelit’s “The Caretaker 3D,” which stars TV icon Dick Van Dyke, will screen Thursday at the Directors Guild of America Theatre, along with the Zachary Quinto-starrer “Hostage: A Love Story”; Derek Waters’ Funny or Die short “Drunk History: Douglass & Lincoln” and Kat Coiro’s “Idiots” with Kate Bosworth and Zoe Saldana, among others.

In all, some 190 shorts from 16 countries will be shown during the festival, which, apart from the opening-night ceremony, will take place at Laemmle’s Sunset 5 in West Hollywood, running Friday through Aug. 12. https://www.hollyshorts.com

Science fiction, fact

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is getting academic with its “Out of This World: The Science of Space Movies” program, beginning Thursday at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Adam Weiner, author of “Don’t Try This At Home! The Physics of Hollywood Movies,” hosts a Thursday evening discussion about the accuracy of the basic principles of physics in such films as 1968’s “Planet of the Apes,” 1995’s “Apollo 13” and last year’s hit “Star Trek.” Clips from each movie will be shown.

Weiner continues with a screening of Fritz Lang’s seminal 1929 sci-fi film “Woman in the Moon” Friday evening at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood

And at 2 p.m. Saturday, the Academy and Cinefamily will screen 1968’s experimental educational film “Project Apollo” with 1989’s Oscar-nominated documentary “For All Mankind” at the Silent Movie Theatre. https://www.oscars.org; https://www.cinefamily.org

Prentiss’ little gems

Screenwriter Larry Karaszewski will screen Howard Hawks’ underrated 1964 comedy “Man’s Favorite Sport?” and the equally underrated 1980 drama “The Black Marble” and talk with the films’ star, Paula Prentiss, Friday at the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. https://www.americancinematheque.com

Hopper and Warhol

Tributes to Dennis Hopper continue Sunday when the Los Angeles Filmforum presents films by artist Andy Warhol featuring the late actor at the Spielberg Theatre inside the Egyptian Theatre. Films to be included are 1964’s “Screen Tests Reel #4” and that year’s “Tarzan and Jane Regained … Sort of,” which features Taylor Mead as Tarzan, Naomi Levine as Jane and Hopper, Irving Blum and Warhol. https://www.lafilmforum.org
