'Steel Magnolias'

In 1989, a memorable role for MacLaine also presented a first for actress Julia Roberts. "Steel Magnolias," a story set in Louisiana that illustrated the bond between women in a small town, helped Roberts earn her first Oscar nomination and Golden Globe win. The film also starred Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field and Daryl Hannah.
