2005: Ennis and Jack
The tent. The look. The deed. Ennis and Jack (the late Heath Ledger, left, and Jake Gyllenhaal) struggle to maintain a forbidden relationship, each also with wives and "straight" lifestyles. The film won Oscars for Ang Lee's direction and more, and racked up the box office dollars once word spread. Its impact on cinema is most felt in the lead actors' conflicting performances, but it even bled into the mainstream consciousness and the general vernacular. Though born of a serious moment in the film, Ennis' line "I wish I knew how to quit you" became an often funny saying that still reverberates with meaning.
[Correction: It was stated earlier that Jack's line in "Brokeback Mountain" was "I can't quit you." It was "I wish I knew how to quit you."]
