Post-death triumph Screenwriter Sidney Howard's adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind" garnered him acclaim months after his death. Though he had been nominated twice before for an Oscar, his treatment of the American drama won him the first posthumous Oscar at the 12th Academy Awards on Feb. 29, 1940.
