EDM Agenda: A rundown of top events for June

Share

This month’s inauguration of the SBE/Insomniac venture Create considerably raised the stakes in the local EDM club world. The venue was slow to announce its schedule at first, but the bookings have come as fast and furious as a Vin Diesel summer action flick: Thomas Gold on Friday; John Dahlback on Saturday; the striking duo (and onetime Britney Spears tour mates) Nervo on June 8; HARD fest veteran Nicky Romero on June 17; R3HAB on June 29.

On top of all that, the new Sunday Sessions was a big success in bringing avant-garde dance music to the modernist fuchsia finery of downtown L.A.’s Grand Park. Big crowds kept it clean and wholesome while cutting loose, which bodes well for June 30’s set with Audiofly, local wonks Droog and the series’ organizer Eduardo Castillo.

While the life of a local dance music talent buyer is getting more complicated in L.A., fans looking for long nights out as summer heats up have a whole new menu of possibilities. Here’s a sampling.

Friday night at Sound, the recent Coachella vet Cassy joins Hercules & Love Affair alum Kim Ann Foxman. Also Friday, the indie-friendly series Private Label lands a quality triple bill of DJ sets from Neon Indian, YACHT and Ladyhawke at Lure in Hollywood while the aptly named bass-heavy DJ-producer Bro Safari hits Avalon. On a busy Saturday in downtown L.A., house vet John Digweed hits the Exchange, while the pioneering and ever-restless local hero John Tejada lights up the Standard Hotel rooftop on Sunday.

On Monday, Sound kicks off its new Monday night with Felix Da Housecat as part of a long-running series, and Droid Behavior hosts Prime at Medusa on Thursday. The hard-house provocateur Miami Horror hits Lure on June 7; the even harsher noise experimentalist Cut Hands (a side project of the legendary noise outfit Whitehouse) terrorizes Complex with African rhythms and bombed-out European distortion; and June 9 hosts the German heavyweight Roman Flugel at the downtown Standard rooftop.

The endearingly laid-back L.A. duo Poolside teams up with the like-minded Goldroom at Lure on June 14, while Burning Man veteran Lee Burridge brings jams to an unlikely locale — Hummingbird Ranch in Simi Valley — on June 16. A Club Called Rhonda comes back to its auxiliary downtown locale with a vengeance on June 21; Magda and Blond:ish do Exchange on June 29, and Iheartcomix’s ambitious alias Off/Cntr hosts the buzzy Mister Lies and Giraffage at Los Globos the same night.

To close out the month, John Tejada again hits the decks on June 30 for an outdoor set at California Plaza with a killer triple bill of Pole and Plaid in honor of the 20th anniversary of electronic promoter Green Galactic. It’s not every day you get a set of experimental techno in an office park on a Sunday afternoon, kids.
