'Lost's' Top 10 Characters

4. Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes (Jorge Garcia)( ABC )
Truly the show's heart, Hurley's the guy the series turns to when it needs to make us feel the pain of the latest character death or needs to get us through some particularly twisted story turns. When the series began, Hurley was mere comic relief, but in his straight-out-of-E.C.-comics back story of cursed lottery numbers and his eventual development into soulful hero, "Lost" managed to take the nerdy audience surrogate and make him into something much more vital: the one guy who understood just how destructive the games everyone on the Island plays were.
Best season: Season 4 uses Hurley as a kind of conscience, constantly prodding Jack about what needs to happen and the cost of the lie they told to protect their friends on the Island. Ultimately, the lie was less of a big deal than the show made it out to be, but Garcia sold it.
Best flashback episode: Season 2's "Dave" is almost criminally underrated, by fans who thought the whole point was that Hurley's friend was imaginary and guessed that fact in the first five minutes. Instead, the episode is a chance to peek into just how messed up Hurley was not so very long ago and the first really moving work by Garcia. (Also good? Season 3's "Tricia Tanaka Is Dead." Man, fans underrate Hurley episodes.)
How we hope it all ends: Hurley, the sole person to make it off the Island alive, becomes a best-selling novelist, turning his Island experiences into fiction. That, or he gets a ticker tape parade. Yeah, probably the parade.
