I've been going to the monthly First Fridays at FAVO since its inception in 2011, and it has now grown to 19 once-upon-a-time-motel rooms full of artists. The quality of work has increased, too, with some professional artists in the lineup now. This month the dynamic duo of Meridith and Monte Olinger will show their mixed-media and abstract paintings from 5-9 p.m. at this event near downtown Orlando. The old motel (220 E. Colonial Drive, enter from Highland Avenue) is under constant rehab with the goal of making it a full-time artist village. Your attendance and purchases will help to make this place a permanent part of our arts community.
Another good place to spend your First Friday evening is at the Lake Eustis Museum of Art, 1 W. Orange Ave. in downtown Eustis. Attend the opening reception Friday, 6-8 p.m., for "Color and Light: Ellie Diez-Massaro." Her black and white infrared photos are hand-painted with brilliant colors. The finished images are like a dream world. Call 352-483-2900 for details.

If you're in the mood to try something really different, then the shows at Stardust Video & Coffee (1842 E. Winter Park Road, Orlando) are sure to satisfy that craving. On Saturday, 8 p.m.-midnight, enjoy live music, meet artist Elizabeth Levensohn and check out her original paintings. She also will sign a copy of "Gothic Folk," her just-published art book that includes a CD of the music /lyrics found beside the image of each painting.
