Nominees announced for Craig Noel Awards, honoring best of San Diego theater

Productions, performances and plays from some two dozen San Diego-area theater companies have been nominated for the 16th edition of the annual Craig Noel Awards.

The awards, presented by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle, are named for the founding director of the Old Globe and the “godfather” of local theater.

Contenders for outstanding dramatic production include “Blue Door,” Moxie Theatre; “Awake and Sing,” New Village Arts Theatre,” “Ballast,” Diversionary Theatre; “The Ballad of Emmett Till,” Ion Theatre; and “Father Comes Home from the Wars, Parts 1, 2 & 3,” Intrepid Theatre.

Nominated in the category of outstanding new musical are “Freaky Friday,” La Jolla Playhouse; “Benny & Joon,” the Old Globe: “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” La Jolla Playhouse; “Tarrytown,” Backyard Renaissance Theatre Company; and “Festival of Christmas: North of Normal,” Lamb’s Players Theatre.

The awards will be presented Feb. 12 at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation in San Diego.
