KIWANIS HONORS OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS
The Burbank Noon Kiwanis Club is dedicated to the children of our community and contributes substantial funds to numerous youth programs in Burbank. One of its special annual functions is the Kiwanis Outstanding Educator Awards Luncheon, which honors one outstanding educator from each school in the Burbank Unified School District, as well as any retiring teachers.
The 2011 Outstanding Educators were: Lois Vaccariello — Burbank Adult Education; Fernando Torres — Emerson Elementary School; Theresa Heldt — Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School; Gina Boulais — Stevenson Elementary School; Cindy Sullivan — Providencia Elementary School; Allison Martinez — Joaquin Miller Elementary School; Tyson Colt — Edison Elementary School; Shawn Mulloy — McKinley Elementary School; Susan Casella — Bret Harte Elementary School; Martha Stoffers — Jefferson Elementary School; Patty Dagata — Washington Elementary School; Darla Gerharter — Walt Disney Elementary School; Kathy Hodgins — Jordan Middle School; Donna Collier — John Muir Middle School; Lisa Raluy — Luther Burbank Middle School; Fred Cook — Burbank High School; Jacqueline Boston — Monterey High School; Vicky Oganyan — John Burroughs High School.
The individual educators were selected by their principals and peers based on at least five years of experience working primarily with students on a regular basis; enthusiasm for learning and a love of students; dedication, effectiveness and competence, as shown through the growth of their pupils; commitment to the professional growth of other teachers; involvement over and above normal job requirements including some community and/or professional involvement.
The educator’s recognition consists of a Kiwanis Certificate and a gift card to purchase educational materials for the class. This year’s luncheon celebration was held on May 4 and organized by Kiwanian Kimberly Jo. Certificates were presented by staff from Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), state Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge), state Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Silver Lake) and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich. School board members Larry Applebaum, Dave Kemp, Ted Bunch and Debbie Kukta were present. Kukta presented a special award to honor retiring teacher Sandra Baade as well as recognized the service of Principal Bruce Osgood who will be joining Village Christian.
