‘Daily Show’ goes to Texas, tackles Ebola in New York

“The Daily Show” is broadcasting from Austin, Texas, this week, but the news was taking place back in its usual home of New York City, where a doctor was diagnosed with Ebola and a nurse was put under mandatory quarantine in New Jersey.

Stewart looked at the hoopla surrounding both incidents in the media and in the actions of politicians and turned to the only place it all made sense: the Twilight Zone.

Switching on a black-and-white filter in the show’s temporary studio at the Zach Theatre, Stewart picked up a cigarette and channeled “Twilight Zone” creator and host Rod Serling.

“Submitted for your approval: A nation gripped by fear of an outbreak,” he said, barely keeping it together. “And yet all this time, the real virus outbreak menacing them was fear.”

Stewart also had an issue with how much more interesting Ebola patient Dr. Craig Spencer’s everyday life was than his, and the uncomfortable conditions nurse Kaci Hickox was being kept in after returning from West Africa.

Hickox was released from quarantine on Monday.

The episode also featured a new opening sequence parodying the opening credits of “Dallas,” with special guest stars aplenty.
