Emmy chat: Come talk to Regina King of ‘American Crime’

Share

Perhaps the most searing and provocative broadcast series of the year, ABC’s “American Crime” examined the racial and cultural tensions that erupted around the brutal attack of a white couple in their suburban home.

The 11-episode series explored prejudice, discrimination and identity in a direct fashion not seen since HBO’s “The Wire,” which ended in 2008.

While the series featured acclaimed performances by Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, Benito Martinez and others, one of the standouts in the cast was Regina King, who played Aliyah Shadeed, a devout Muslim woman with a deep distrust of whites who feels that her brother, a meth addict, has been unfairly charged with the crime.

The portrayal marked a career high point for King, who has appeared in numerous TV shows and films during the last two decades. King has also branched out into directing in recent years, helming episodes of “Scandal,” “Being Mary Jane” and other projects. And she has already been cast for the second season of “American Crime.”

King will be visiting The Times on Wednesday at 2 p.m. PDT to discuss “American Crime” and some of her other projects. You can tweet her questions using #askLATimes.
