HBO sets premiere date for ‘Newsroom,’ ‘Comeback’ and ‘Getting On’

Come November on HBO, it’s farewell meets revival meets second chances.

HBO has christened Nov. 9 as the launch night for the new seasons of “The Newsroom,” “The Comeback” and “Getting On,” beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

“The Newsroom,” Aaron Sorkin’s ode to broadcast journalism, will start off the night, rolling out its third and final season. The goodbye romp by Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) and his staff will unfold over six episodes.

The hour of heady dialogue and deadline hysterics will lead into the return of humiliation with “The Comeback” at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The comedy, which returns in a limited capacity, reacquaints audiences to Valerie Cherich, the fading TV star hellbent on staying in the spotlight who is played by Lisa Kudrow. The show, which will consist of eight episodes, picks up 10 years from where we left off.

The comedy, created by Kudrow and “Sex and the City” show runner Michael Patrick King, didn’t catch on when it first aired in 2005, and was canceled. But it reached cult status in its afterlife, leaving many thrilled by its revival.

Closing out the night is the second season of medical comedy “Getting On.” The series, from Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer (“Big Love”), is an adaptation from a BBC series of the same name and features a cast of female comedy vets such as Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy,” “Mad TV”) and Niecy Nash (“Reno 911!”) as staffers who care for the elderly at a geriatric wing of a hospital.

The sophomore outing of the comedy, which premiered last November to soft ratings, will consist of six episodes.
