Ted Cruz tells Seth Meyers media turned him into ‘Freddy Krueger’

On Monday, a video was posted on YouTube showing Texas Sen. Ted Cruz speaking to a group over the weekend in New Hampshire and inadvertently freaking out a 3-year-old girl with his rhetoric that the Obama-Clinton foreign policy was a disaster and “the whole world’s on fire.”

“The world’s on fire?” said girl in the front row, identified by the Washington Post as Julie Trant. Laughter ensued.

Not surprisingly, the media ran with the story. Cruz appeared on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” on Monday night and did his best to re-humanize himself.

“In the last 24 hours there have been 50 media stories that say ‘Cruz terrifies little girl.’ By the end of it, I was Freddy Krueger, I had the fingernails. I mean, it was terrible.”

He went on to say that he was able to calm the girl down and even make her see him not as a boogeyman but as a kind of fireman.

Kids “are so bad with metaphors,” Meyers replied.

But though he hasn’t formally announced his bid for president, Cruz has signaled where his “base” lies: the 3- to 6-year-old demographic. After all, this is a guy who read Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” on the Senate floor during a filibuster in 2013.

As Meyers explained, “I think, in the end, that girl’s problem isn’t anything more than her mother doesn’t know what 3-year-olds like to do on a Saturday,” he said. “I hope she got ice cream on the way there and the way home.”
