In an era of escalating budgets for diminishing returns, Paramount Pictures may have found the proverbial golden goose. The "Paranormal Activity" series has grossed more than a half-billion dollars worldwide, and the third film in the series had a series-best opening weekend of $52 million. That beat studio estimates by about $7 million. That the films succeed without any stars on a shoestring budget means the "Paranormal Activity" franchise may one day scare up as many sequels as "Saw," "Final Destination" or "Friday the 13th."
