Al Gore to lead Current TV’s presidential debate coverage

Who’s more qualified to analyze a presidential debate than someone who’s actually participated in one?

This appears to be the thinking at Current TV. On Wednesday the fledgling cable news network announced that former vice president and Current TV founder Al Gore would lead coverage and analysis of the upcoming presidential debates, the first of which is scheduled for Oct. 3.

Gore will be joined by Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who gave one of the most rousing speeches at this month’s Democratic National Convention, former New York governor and CNN castoff Eliot Spitzer, commentator Cenk Uygur and comedian John Fugelsang.

In recent months, Gore has been playing a more prominent role at Current TV, the network he co-founded with Joel Hyatt in 2005, leading coverage of both the Republican and Democratic Conventions.

Despite Gore’s high visibility and the hiring of big names such as Spitzer, Joy Behar and Keith Olbermann, who was fired in June after less than a year on the air, the left-leaning network has struggled to find an audience.
