‘Better Call Saul’: Jonathan Banks to star in ‘Breaking Bad’ prequel

“Breaking Bad” might not be with us any longer, but one of the show’s most beloved characters, the grizzled hit man Mike Ehrmantraut, will return in “Better Call Saul,” AMC’s spinoff.

Along with Bob Odenkirk, who will reprise his titular role as crooked lawyer Saul Goodman, Jonathan Banks will be a regular on the series, which is being co-produced by Sony Pictures Television. The prequel, created by Vince Gilligan and “Breaking Bad” writer Peter Gould, will follow Saul’s no doubt sleazy dealings in the years before he crossed paths with Bryan Cranston’s Walter White.

As “Breaking Bad” fans will recall, Mike appeared near the end of the show’s second season. A former Philly cop, Mike began as a loyal hit man and enforcer for Walt’s adversary, fast-food impresario and drug lord Gustavo Fring. Tough as nails but also intelligent and big-hearted, Mike quickly became a fan favorite.

“Better Call Saul,” which is one of two spinoff series in the works at AMC, is set to premiere in November.
